Liliane Mugabekazi, a 24-year-old Rwandese lady faces up to two years in jail for “public indecency” after she was arrested on August 7, 2022 for what the prosecutors termed as wearing “shameful” clothing; which according to prosecution is a “serious crime”.

“She attended the concert while wearing clothes that reveal her private parts… clothes that we call shameful," said the prosecutors.

Mugabekazi is reported to have attended a Tayc concert eight days earlier wearing a see-me through dress.

The prosecutors asked the court to remand Mugabekazi for 30 days on grounds that it was a serious offense.

“She is suspected to have committed public indecency," the spokesman for the prosecution, Faustin Nkusi said. He added that the court will be announcing on Tuesday if she will receive bail.

Reports on the arrest of Mugabekazi stirred an outrage from a section of the people; but the police spokesperson James Bosco Kabera, in a television interview, rebuked immorality and indecency among the young people saying that the problem is on a fast rise. He added that you find people wearing only a shirt without pants or shorts.

“These people then go to public places dressed like that, with clothes that look like nets."

There was a similar arrest earlier this year, in March, where a 20-year-old lady was arrested for “public drunkenness and indecent assault. She was arrested after a video of her drunkenly lying on the ground made rounds on social media.
