Ginger is a plant that originated in Southeast Asia. Its among the healthiest spices on the planet and it belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and its closely related to turmeric, cardamom and galan gal. Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered or as an oil or juice. It's a very common ingredient in recipes.

The following are some of the healthy benefits of consuming ginger;
1. Reduces the risk of diabetes 
Ginger has been shown in several trials to help control blood sugar and thereby manage and prevent diabetes. The chemicals in ginger aid in boosting metabolism and enhance insulin release by blocking certain enzymes.  Fresh ginger and non-sugar-fortified ginger varieties are the best.
2. Contains ginger which has powerful medicinal properties
Ginger is used to aid in digestion, reduce nausea and help fight  flu and common cold. The unique fragrance and flavour of ginger come from it's natural oils the most important of which is gingerol which is the main bioactive compound in ginger. Its responsible for much of ginger's medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Gingerol helps reduce oxidative stress which is the result of having excess amount of free radicals in the body.

3. Ginger can be used to treat nausea
It is highly used to treat nausea especially morning sickness. It may help relieve nausea and vomiting effectively for people undergoing certain types of surgery. It can also chemotherapy related nausea. Ginger is however highly effective when it comes to pregnancy-related nausea such as morning sickness. Even though ginger is safe, it is advisable to always talk to your doctor before consuming large amounts if pregnant. Women who have had a miscarriage or who are close to labor are advised to avoid ginger since it has an history of vaginal bleeding and clotting disorders. 
4. May help with weight loss
A study that was conducted in 2016 of women with obesity found that ginger could help reduce body mass index and insulin levels. High blood insulin levels are associated with obesity. Ginger has a mechanism that helps increase the number of calories burned or reduce inflammation.
5. Ginger helps with Osteoarthritis 
Osteoarthritis involves degeneration of the joints in the body leading to joint pain and stiffness. Ginger helps to reduce pain and disability. A study done in 2011 found that combining ginger with mastic, cinnamon and sesame oil can help reduce pain and stiffness in people with osteoarthritis of the knee.
6. Helps in treating chronic indigestion 
Chronic indigestion is characterized by recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper part of the stomach. It's believed that delayed emptying of the stomach is a major driver of indigestion.  Ginger helps speed up emptying of the stomach. People with dyspepsia which is indigestion with no cause can take ginger.
