The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), looks set to reprise its glory days’ recognition as the most sophisticated meat processor in East Africa. All this comes after the government took direct control over the commission last September and placed it under the management of the Kenya Defence Forces. The takeover comes after decades of egregious loss-making and mismanagement were observed from the commission.

The commission launched a cashless outlet in Nairobi that fetches Sh 1 million daily, overshadowing previous earnings before the takeover of less than Sh 80,000. In addition to this, the commission also has a slaughter capacity of about 2,500 large and small stock per day. A significant improvement after previously going for over two weeks without a slaughter due to mismanagement.

All this gives hope to meat farmers around the country who will benefit from the live animal weighting system and 72 hr payment processing period.

Could this be a good opportunity for both prospective and current meat farmers in the industry?
