A police officer from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) stationed in Kasarani has been detained in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in the region last week.

The suspect, Police Constable Geoffrey Korir Kiplangat, is reported to have kidnapped Daniel Nyagaka at Thika Road mall before snatching Ksh.2.2 million and two HP computers worth a total of Ksh.134, 000 from his Toyota Mark X car. The perpetrators also transferred Ksh.2,500 from the victim's M-Pesa account to a Kiplangat-owned phone number.

The perpetrators also transferred Ksh.2,500 from the victim's M-Pesa account to a Kiplangat-owned phone number. Nyagaka had driven to Thika mall on the day in question, according to a charge sheet reviewed by Citizen Digital, to allegedly acquire a power saw from one Dillip Otieno Hongo, when the event occurred.

Hongo is believed to have arrived in the Mall's parking lot with someone Nyagaka had never met before. Kiplangat and his three companions approached the group moments later, claiming to be police officials. One of the assailants was said to be carrying a firearm. Before departing the scene, the suspects handcuffed Nyagaka, Hongo, and the unidentified guy before ransacking the victim's car, where they discovered the cash and two laptops.
Nyagaka reported the crime to the Kasarani Police Station, which passed it to the DCI's Special Crimes Unit, which was able to locate and apprehend Kiplangat after the victim positively identified him.

Sleuths discovered a Ceska handgun with 15 rounds of ammo, a camouflage police pant and jacket, one HP laptop, black documents imitating Kenyan cash, and a certificate of appointment after examining Kiplangat's residential residence in the Allsops neighborhood. The suspect's national identification card, a red beret, and a crown badge were also seized.
The locations of the remaining suspects are still being investigated, as is if there was any connection between the thieves and the two guys who met the victim earlier to offer him a power saw.
