Day one of five day championships in Nairobi ,Kenya. First Lady Margaret Kenyatta presided over the opening ceremony yesterday, August 17th.

Every two years, young athletes from more than 100 countries usually compete in the World U20 Championships. The Championships which is being hosted by Kenya this year, was to begin on 17th August and end on August 22 but will begin today, the August 18 and end on the 22nd.

The five day event will take place at Kasarani stadium. Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei thanked World Athletics for awarding Kenya the hosting rights. Kenya will be represented by 46 athletes in various categories as they seek to defend the title won in the last edition. The last championships were held in Tampere, Finland in 2018.

Kenyan First Lady Margaret Kenyatta presided over an opening ceremony of the 2021 World Athletics Under20 Championships at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani. The event will feature more than 100 countries including neutral athletes and the refugee team who will be competing under the World Athletes flag.
