An Overlooked Opportunity for Gusii Unity

An Overlooked Opportunity for Gusii Unity
BY ERIC ABUGA
The Abagusii community stands at a critical crossroads; it must choose whether to make significant political, economic, and social progress or risk being left behind in the rapidly changing political landscape of the country.ย
The community's weakened bargaining power in every election cycle continues to undermine its political prospects.ย
The lack of unified leadership hampers the ability to strengthen the community's influence at the national level, leading to a diminished voice in advocating for the people's needs and priorities.
Years of self-interest have compounded the issue, placing the community at risk of being overlooked due to disunity and a lack of coordinated leadership.ย

Despite having the benefit of experienced leaders such as former Governor James Ongwae, former Chief Justice David Maraga, and several former Cabinet Ministersโincluding Prof. Sam Ongeri, Dr. Fred Matiangโi, and Chris Obureโthe community struggles to organize effectively.
Key figures from the community hold influential positions both elected and appointed, including Cabinet Secretary Julius Migosi, Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyamira Senator Okongo Omogeni, Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro, and Ambassador Joash Maangi.ย
Yet, despite this substantial representation, the community has failed to capitalize on the opportunity to advance its development and political agenda for nearly two decades.
The pervasive atmosphere of hostility and jealousy among the leadership has only widened the gap in establishing a well-structured and coordinated system that brings together all Gusii leaders across different political divides.ย
Additionally, the wealth of political experience among top leaders from the region has been neglected, preventing younger leaders from achieving consistent progress for the community.
Despite diverse linguistic and cultural heritages, the community has managed to maintain a strong collective identity rooted in shared experiences and history.ย
The upcoming political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections may represent a unique opportunity for the community to make a significant political statement.
The current leadership is eager to assert itself, a move that could elevate the communityโs political stance.ย
Furthermore, the aspirations of both Dr. Matiangโi and Maraga to rise to the countryโs top leadership positions have brought much-needed attention to the Gusii community in the national political discourse.
