COURT BLOCKS GLADYS CHANIA'S SOUTH KOREA TRIP, CITES FLIGHT RISK IN MURDER CASE
The High Court refuses to release Gladys Chania's passport for an October 1–6 South Korea engagement, citing flight risk and finding no exceptional circumstances while her murder trial over her husband's death continues.

Former Kiambu politician Gladys Njeri Mwangi, popularly known as Gladys Chania, has been blocked from travelling to South Korea while her murder case over the death of her husband, George Mwangi, remains before the court.
The High Court rejected Chania’s request to temporarily recover her passport to enable her to travel to South Korea for a government-to-government engagement scheduled for October 1 to 6, 2026.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the proposed trip did not amount to an exceptional circumstance warranting the temporary release of her passport. The court also cited concerns over the possibility of international flight risk.
Chania’s passport is part of the conditions imposed to ensure that she remains available for her ongoing murder trial. She had argued that the South Korea engagement was official and that she had previously participated in similar initiatives.
The prosecution opposed the request, raising concerns about her ability to return to Kenya and attend court proceedings.
Chania is facing a murder charge linked to the death of her husband, George Mwangi, a Rwanda-based engineer and contractor. Mwangi’s body was discovered in Kieni Forest, Gatundu, in October 2022.
Investigators have alleged that Mwangi was killed at the couple’s home in Mang’u before his body was moved and dumped in the forest. Chania and Morris Kamau Mbugua were subsequently charged in connection with the death.
Chania remains an accused person in the case and has not been convicted. The murder proceedings are ongoing.
