OL KALOU DECIDES: UDA, DCP BATTLE FOR POLITICAL SUPREMACY IN HIGH-STAKES BY-ELECTION OL KALOU, NYANDARUA COUNTY.
Ol Kalou voters headed to the polls Thursday in a parliamentary by-election widely seen as a political contest between President William Ruto's UDA and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's DCP.
UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga expressed satisfaction with the voting process after casting his ballot, praising the heavy security deployment across the constituency.
"The security arrangement has helped ensure a peaceful voting process despite isolated incidents reported on the eve of the election," Nyaga said.
His main challenger, DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho, also commended election officials while noting minor concerns.
As well DCP secretary Methu commented stating:
"So far, we are very satisfied with the way the IEBC is conducting the Ol Kalou by-election," — DCP Secretary General Methu.
At one polling station, tensions briefly flared after residents reportedly confronted and chased away individuals they claimed were ununiformed police officers attempting to access the polling station. The incident was resolved without disrupting voting, and polling continued under the watch of uniformed security officers.
Security agencies maintained a heightened presence throughout the constituency following isolated incidents of violence reported ahead of the by-election. Election officials continued to urge voters to remain peaceful as they exercised their democratic right.
Political analysts are watching the outcome closely, with many viewing the race as an early indicator of the shifting political landscape in Mt. Kenya. A DCP victory would likely strengthen Gachagua's claim of growing support in the region, while a UDA win would bolster President Ruto's assertion that his party remains firmly rooted in one of Kenya's most influential voting blocs.
As counting begins after the close of polling, attention will shift from campaign rhetoric to the ballot boxes, where voters will ultimately determine whether Mt. Kenya remains loyal to UDA or signals growing support for Gachagua's emerging political movement. With polling underway, the final verdict now rests with voters as the constituency decides not only its next Member of Parliament but also delivers an early signal on the region's evolving political landscape.
