PUBLIC UNIVERSITY LECTURERS ISSUE 7-DAY STRIKE ULTIMATUM OVER STALLED CBA NEGOTIATIONS
UASU gives the government and university councils seven days to resolve stalled CBA negotiations, insisting lecturer salaries be funded through the National Exchequer rather than student fees, or face a nationwide strike.

Kenya’s public universities are facing possible disruption after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a nationwide strike notice over unresolved issues surrounding the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
UASU has given the government and university authorities seven days to address the outstanding issues, warning that lecturers could withdraw their services if no agreement is reached.
The union has raised concerns over delays in concluding and implementing the new CBA, which covers issues including remuneration and other terms and conditions of service for academic staff.
According to the union, negotiations have continued without a satisfactory financial offer from the government. UASU has also maintained that lecturers’ salaries and other benefits should be adequately funded through the National Exchequer rather than relying on revenue generated from students.
If the strike proceeds, teaching and other academic activities in public universities could be affected, potentially disrupting lectures, examinations, marking and other university programmes.
The notice comes at a time when public universities are already dealing with financial pressures and changes in higher education funding.
UASU’s planned industrial action is therefore likely to put pressure on the government, university councils and other stakeholders to resolve the outstanding CBA issues before the strike deadline.
The union has indicated that lecturers will proceed with the strike if the dispute is not resolved within the stipulated period.
The development does not mean that public universities have already shut down. Rather, it signals a potential nationwide disruption should negotiations fail to produce an agreement before the strike takes effect.
