Kenyans have expressed varied opinions after President William Ruto said weather experts have informed him that there will be no El Nino rains as earlier predicted. On Sunday, October 22, Ruto said that Kenya will have significant rains as Kenyan Meteorological Department has scaled down its EL Nino warnings. Ruto said as Kenyans had heard that there was a prediction tht there would be EL Nino that could have ruined properties but because of God there will be only significant rains wihich will not get to that level of distruction but believed to better farming and increasing agricultural production.
Reacting on the president's announcement, Kenyans expressed fear of the money set aside for EL Nino being misappropriated. According to the reports, previously Deputy Preident Rigathi Gachagua disclosed that the country would require Ksh 10 billion to respond to issues arising from EL Nino especially in ASAL areas The Council of Governors through Governors Ann Waiguru also said that the counties would require Ksh 15 billion in food for the displaced households. Some counties would such as Nairobi had already procured some items in readiness for EL Nino. While on this, a resident from Nairobi suggested that the billions allocated for the rains be redirected into helping the suffring Kenyans.
What EACC said about EL Nino funds; Earlier Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC) chief executive officer Twalib Mbarak said they had intelligence that some counties and some institutions within the national government had plans to misuse funds set aside for EL Nino. Speaking to Citizen Tv on the night of Wednesday, September 27, Mbarak said their might be scandols coming up at the expense of the people. He said people now are coming up with the so-called mitigation plans aimed to countering EL Nino funds, which will not be allowed.
