Matatu leaders propose formation of a cooperative to boost the sector

In a significant move to enhance the matatu sector, leaders from the industry have proposed the establishment of a cooperative for matatu owners and operators from various stages. This initiative, spearheaded by the matatu chairperson Okong'o Mose, aims to create a unified body to address common challenges and promote mutual benefits.

During a press conference held yesterday, Okong'o Mose emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective effort in navigating the evolving landscape of the matatu industry. "We are urging all matatu owners and operators to register and join this cooperative. Together, we can support each other and strengthen our sector," Mose stated.

The cooperative's formation is seen as a strategic move to consolidate resources, streamline operations, and improve financial stability for members. By pooling resources, the cooperative will be better positioned to negotiate for better terms with suppliers, access credit facilities, and provide a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices.

The leaders have planned a fundraising event to be held today. The event will be graced by Kisii County Governor Hon. Paul Simba Arati, who has been a vocal supporter of initiatives aimed at bolstering local businesses and improving public transportation. Governor Arati is expected to deliver a keynote address and underscore the county government's commitment to supporting the matatu sector.

"We are calling on leaders and stakeholders from all walks of life to join us in this noble cause. Financial support is crucial for the establishment of the cooperative, and we believe that with the community's backing, we can achieve great things," Mose added.

The fundraising event is anticipated to attract a significant turnout, including local leaders, business owners, and members of the public. Contributions from this event will go towards the initial capital required to register the cooperative, set up administrative structures, and launch key projects aimed at improving service delivery and operational efficiency within the matatu sector.

This initiative comes at a time when the matatu industry is facing numerous challenges, including fluctuating fuel prices, regulatory changes, and competition from other modes of transportation. The formation of a cooperative is expected to provide a cushion against these challenges and ensure that matatu operators remain competitive and sustainable in the long run.
