MP Nyakundi Issues Warning to Schools Over Sending Students Home for Fees

Education and student welfare dominated discussions during a visit by the area MP.

Japheth Nyakundi, the Member of Parliament for Kitutu Chache North Constituency in Kisii County, visited Nyakome Secondary School where he distributed bursaries to students from various schools across the constituency.

The bursaries are part of efforts to support learners from vulnerable families and ensure that no student misses out on education due to financial challenges. The funds are expected to help parents meet school fee requirements and keep students in class.

During the visit, the MP expressed concern over the school’s performance in the previous year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, noting that the mean score was lower than expected. He also raised alarm over the low number of Grade 10 students, revealing that only two learners are currently enrolled at that level.

Nyakundi urged teachers to intensify their efforts in improving academic performance, emphasizing that education remains a key priority for the constituency’s leadership.

He assured teachers that leaders are working hard to support schools through bursaries and development initiatives and encouraged them to play their role by improving learning outcomes.

The MP also called on parents to support their children’s education by paying school fees whenever possible, noting that government bursaries are meant to ease the burden rather than replace parental responsibility.

At the same time, Nyakundi warned school management against sending students home due to unpaid fees, stating that such actions disrupt learning and disadvantage students from vulnerable families.

He emphasized the need for cooperation between parents, teachers and leaders to ensure that all learners remain in school and receive quality education.
