South Africa Holds Parliamentary and Provincial Elections Amidst High Stakes
South Africa yesterday welcomed the election of members of parliament and provincial leaders. Following this, the political party with the most members in parliament will produce the president of the country.
The current president, Cyril Ramaphosa of the ANC party, is defending his seat for the first time against other competitors, including former president Jacob Zuma of the Umkhonto we Sizwe party, John Steenhuisen of the Democratic Alliance, and Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
President Ramaphosa faces strong competition due to high levels of corruption, unemployment, crime rates, and other challenges in South Africa. The former president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, is overseeing the elections.
