A 13-year-old Grade 2 pupil, Purity Nyaboke, was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight by her own uncle, Julius Onyonka, who struck her twice on the head with a panga as she walked home from school for lunch in Kisii County
A 13-year-old Grade 2 pupil from Etora Mission School (Purity Nyaboke) in Nyamatuta was brutally killed in broad daylight by her uncle, Julius Onyonka, while heading home from school for lunch in Bigege Sub-Location, Bogusero Ward, Kitutu Chache South, Kisii County.
According to reports, Purity was heading home from school for lunch when the horrifying attack occurred. Her uncle attacked her with a panga, striking her twice on the head. Villagers said the young girl sustained severe injuries that led to her tragic death on the spot.
The shocking incident sparked fury among residents of Nyabigege Village, who stormed the suspect’s homestead and torched his house as well as his mother’s house. The mother is believed to have been defending her son’s previous heinous acts. After the incident, the suspect, fearing for his life, fled and surrendered at a police station in Nyamira, where he is currently being held.
Speaking with pain and sorrow, Purity’s father revealed that Julius Onyonka is his biological brother. He said they had experienced minor family conflicts with him, but he never thought the disputes could escalate to the murder of his young daughter. He added that his brother was a regular user of drugs, mainly bhang, which he suspects influenced the suspect’s ruthless action.
Residents described Julius as a man who had previously engaged in criminal activities and had once been jailed. However, his mother kept intervening and secured his release out of mercy. Fearing for her life, the mother also ran away before the angry villagers arrived at her home. They accused her of tolerating his behaviour for too long, which made him believe he could do anything and get away with it. Villagers expressed deep frustration, saying the community had tolerated his actions for far too long
.
One villager emotionally stated that Purity’s family lives in extreme poverty and struggles even to afford school fees and basic needs. Despite the hardships, Purity’s father said he worked tirelessly to provide food and education for his children, even after a big chunk of their family land had been sold.
Angry residents chased away the first police officers who had come to secure the scene and record statements. They accused the police of failing to take prior action, which allowed the suspect to continue his criminal activities in the village.
The residents called on security agencies to ensure the suspect remains behind bars permanently and never sets foot in the village again, warning that his return could trigger more violence as they would lynch him.
The body of Purity Nyaboke was taken to Kisii Referral Hospital Mortuary for further examination, while investigations continue and the suspect remains in police custody.
