An eight-year-old girl is recovering under protection after she was allegedly subjected to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at her home in Dandora, Nairobi.
The girl’s 32-year-old mother, identified as Frolence Ngendo Nyambura, was arrested following the incident in Dandora Phase 2 Estate.
According to police, neighbours raised the alarm after allegedly discovering that the woman was carrying out the procedure on her daughter using a surgical blade.
Members of the public reportedly confronted and restrained the woman before police officers and a Sub-County Children’s Officer arrived at the scene.
The girl was taken to Dandora Phase 3 Health Centre, where she received medical treatment. She was later discharged in stable condition and placed in a safe home as authorities continued to ensure her safety and recovery.
The mother remains in police custody at Dandora Police Station and is expected to be charged under the Prohibition of FGM Act, 2011, and the Children Act, among other possible offences.
The case comes amid continued efforts by authorities and child-protection organisations to combat FGM, particularly among children, and ensure those responsible face legal action.
