President William Ruto’s expansive residence in Kilgoris, Narok County, has attracted renewed public attention following reports highlighting its transformation from a neglected property associated with Kenya’s former Vice President Joseph Zuzarte Murumbi into a modern and luxurious retreat.

The property, commonly associated with Murumbi’s Intona Ranch, has a long history dating back to the former vice president, who served alongside founding President Jomo Kenyatta. Murumbi died in 1990, after which reports indicate that the property fell into disrepair.

Ruto reportedly acquired the property in 2015 after settling a loan that Murumbi’s company, Intona Ranch, owed to the Agricultural Finance Corporation. Media reports have put the amount involved at approximately Sh8.9 million.

Following the acquisition, the property underwent extensive refurbishment. Images and reports from the renovated residence show modern interiors, improved landscaping, expansive outdoor spaces and upgraded facilities, giving the once-deteriorated property a markedly different appearance.

The residence is widely reported to have about 35 rooms and sits on a large tract of land in the Kilgoris area. It has since become one of Ruto’s preferred private retreats and has also been used to host important guests and family events.

The property recently attracted attention after hosting a traditional family ceremony involving Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, giving Kenyans another glimpse of the expansive compound and its modern facilities.

While the transformation of the property is well documented, details concerning the exact cost of the renovations and who specifically undertook or supervised the work have not been publicly established through authoritative records.

The Kilgoris residence therefore represents not only a striking physical transformation but also a piece of Kenya’s political history—linking the legacy of one of the country’s early political leaders, Joseph Murumbi, with the current presidency.

What was once associated with a prominent figure in Kenya’s independence-era politics has today become a modern private residence frequently associated with President Ruto.
