An Embu journalist has recounted the tense moments leading to the torching of his vehicle during chaotic scenes that disrupted a UDA grassroots mobilisation and empowerment meeting in Embu County.

Murimi Wa Mugendi, a journalist with Wimwaro FM, said his vehicle was set ablaze during the clashes at Nembure Stadium in Manyatta Constituency on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

The journalist reportedly watched helplessly as his vehicle, valued at about Sh700,000, was reduced to ashes amid the unrest.

The chaos erupted during a political gathering associated with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, with reports indicating that rival groups clashed at the venue. The confrontation reportedly escalated, with vehicles and other property damaged or set on fire.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire confirmed that a journalist's vehicle was among those burnt during the incident. Reports indicated that several other vehicles were also torched as the situation deteriorated.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of journalists covering political events, particularly during periods of heightened political tension.
Following the chaos, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said UDA officials in Embu had been tasked with verifying the losses and coordinating a response to those affected.

The destruction of the journalist's vehicle has also renewed calls for political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint and ensure that political disagreements do not result in violence, destruction of property or threats to members of the media.

As investigations into the incident continue, questions remain over who was responsible for the torching of the vehicles and whether those behind the destruction will be held accountable.
