James Manyega, 67, of Boroko Village, Isamwera, Bonchari Constituency, was found dead in a sugarcane plantation in what his family believes was a brutal killing linked to a long-running extramarital affair.

The affair, which relatives allege lasted for more than 10 years, is said to have involved a married woman identified as Gladys. The circumstances surrounding Manyega's death remain under investigation, but the family claims the woman's sons were involved in the assault that led to his death. Police are yet to establish the exact motive for the killing.

According to family member Robert Okeyo, the incident occurred at night after he received a distress call from a clan elder.

"The clan elder called and told me, 'Come quickly and help your uncle. He is being killed by Gladys' sons,'" Robert recalled.

Robert said Manyega had allegedly been involved in a relationship with Gladys for nearly 15 years, despite both of them having families. He claimed Gladys' husband left the village about 10 years ago to work as a security guard after discovering the affair and has never returned.

According to the family, Gladys' sons said the confrontation began after they returned home from a disco matanga (funeral night vigil). They claimed they knocked on their mother's door, but she delayed opening it, making them suspect that Manyega was inside the house.

The sons allegedly confronted Manyega as he attempted to flee. They chased him, caught up with him, and assaulted him using a metal rod.
When Manyega's relatives later went to Gladys' home searching for him, they found the sons there.

"They admitted that they had beaten him and said they left him walking towards the nearby trees. They insisted they had only injured his legs," Robert said.

However, an eyewitness gave the family a different account.

"They beat him severely. From what I saw, his life was in great danger," the witness reportedly said.

The family believes there may have been another motive behind the killing, arguing that the alleged affair had been known within the village for many years.

"This was not the first time they knew about the relationship. There must be another reason why they beat him to death. Those responsible should be arrested and explain why they killed him," Robert said.

The family also alleged that for nearly 15 years, Manyega regularly sold sugarcane and gave part of the proceeds to Gladys.
Manyega's brother, Samuel Nyabiage, called on authorities to take swift action.

"The people who did this are well known in the village. They must be arrested, and the government should act before such incidents become more common," he said.

Samuel also urged couples to remain faithful in their marriages.

"People should respect their marriages because the consequences of affairs can be tragic," he added.

Manyega's wife, Agnes Mokera, recounted the final hours before her husband's body was discovered.

She said she had travelled to attend a funeral ceremony and received a distressing phone call from one of her children at around 4:00 a.m.

"My child called and told me, 'Father is not in the house. He was beaten, and we cannot find him. We are checking at Nyangena Hospital to see whether he went there for treatment, but his phone is with Gladys' sons, who beat him,'" Agnes recalled.

She questioned how they could contact her husband when his mobile phone was allegedly in the possession of the suspects.
Agnes said she returned home at around 6:00 a.m. but did not find her husband. She instructed her son, Vincent, to continue searching while she attended to household chores, including milking the family cow.

After finishing, she went to buy airtime so she could call and follow up on the search.

"As I was going to buy airtime, I met a villager who told me that my husband had been found dead beside a river," she said.

Agnes also alleged that her husband had been financially supporting Gladys.

"Recently he sent her KSh 40,000, and later another KSh 5,000," she claimed.

The family is now appealing to investigators to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that everyone found responsible for Manyega's death is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the motive behind the killing has not yet been officially established.
