Harry Kane has etched his name into football history after winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to receive the prestigious individual award.
The Bayern Munich and England captain was announced as the winner at the London Palladium on Monday night, ending a drought that had stretched back to 2001, when former Liverpool striker Michael Owen claimed the honour.
Kane, 33, beat Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who finished second, and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, who placed third, following an outstanding 2025–26 campaign that combined prolific goalscoring with major team honours.
Kane’s victory was driven by extraordinary numbers. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich and finished the season with 73 goals and eight assists in 65 matches for club and country.
His goals helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title, the German Cup and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. He also scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup, where England finished third, recording their best performance at the tournament since winning it in 1966.
The Ballon d’Or recognition adds another milestone to a career built on consistency, determination and an ability to deliver in front of goal.
Kane also received the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the season’s outstanding goalscorer, further underlining his dominance in the attacking department.
Kane becomes only the fifth Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, joining Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
His victory also marks a significant achievement for Bayern Munich, with the German club celebrating its first Ballon d’Or winner since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge received the award in 1981.
Speaking after receiving the trophy, Kane expressed his excitement at winning the award in London, describing the occasion as particularly special. He also acknowledged the contributions of his teammates, coaches, family and supporters throughout his career.
The ceremony produced further notable winners. Spain’s Alexia Putellas claimed the women’s Ballon d’Or for a third time, while Barcelona’s Yamal received the young-player honour. Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka was recognised with the Socrates Award for his charitable work.
Kane’s achievement carries added significance because of the challenges that marked his earlier career.
Despite becoming Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goalscorer, he left the north London club in 2023 without winning a major team trophy. His move to Bayern Munich was driven partly by the desire to compete consistently for silverware.
After a trophyless first season in Germany, Kane helped Bayern reclaim the Bundesliga title in 2024–25 before delivering an even more prolific campaign the following year.
His Ballon d’Or victory now provides individual recognition for a season in which his goals helped Bayern collect trophies and England reach the latter stages of the World Cup.
For English football, the award ends a generation-long wait. For Kane, it marks the latest chapter in a career that has transformed him from a promising academy player into one of the most celebrated strikers of his generation.
Twenty-five years after Michael Owen last brought the award to England, Kane has restored the country’s name to the top of football’s individual honours.
