Nyamira Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi has urged political leaders to embrace peaceful politics while calling for stronger measures to protect children from violence, abuse, and exploitation.
Speaking during a development event at Gucha SDA Secondary School in Bosamaro Ward, West Mugirango Constituency, Momanyi launched NGAAF development projects that included the distribution of water tanks to several schools and donations of footballs and uniforms to local football clubs.
The projects were implemented through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) in partnership with the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.
Momanyi said leaders should use political platforms to unite communities rather than create divisions, emphasizing that peaceful campaigns are essential for maintaining stability and promoting development.
She also defended her record as Women Representative, highlighting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of girls and students across Nyamira County.
"As I seek the governor's seat, I will not abuse anyone because I am not better than anyone else. I have come out to ask for your support. The work you gave me as Women Representative, I have served your girls well through the provision of sanitary towels. I have also advocated for water tanks in schools because when girls go to rivers to fetch water, that is where they are exposed to risks of rape and abduction. I have provided water tanks to almost all schools in Nyamira," Momanyi said.
The legislator further expressed concern over the recent incident in Kisii County where two young girls were allegedly defiled and killed, describing it as disturbing and urging parents and communities to remain vigilant in protecting children.
She called on parents, local leaders, and security agencies to work together in preventing violence against children and ensuring young people grow up in a safe environment.
"Parents of today should understand that the first responsibility God gave us is to take care of our children," she said.
Momanyi also appealed to the government to ensure that individuals responsible for crimes against children are arrested, prosecuted, and punished according to the law to discourage similar acts in the future.
Residents and school representatives welcomed the NGAAF support, saying the water tanks will improve access to clean water in schools while the sports equipment will help nurture young talent and encourage youth participation in football activities across Bosamaro Ward.
