KENYA’S OPPOSITION ENTERS A NEW ERA AS AZIMIO ADOPTS ‘UKOMBOZI’ BRAND
Azimio has adopted The Ukombozi Alliance as its new political identity, amid a separate dispute over the use of the “Ukombozi” name by a political initiative linked to Edwin Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi.

Kenya’s opposition politics has entered a new phase after the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition adopted a new identity, The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), as political formations prepare for the 2027 General Election.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebranding on September 21, 2026, saying the decision had been unanimously approved by the coalition’s leadership. He said the new identity was part of efforts to reorganise the opposition and create a broader political platform ahead of the next election.
The announcement, however, has coincided with a separate political initiative associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has also been linked to plans to use the Ukombozi name.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties rejected a proposed change of the United Democratic Party's name to Ukombozi People's Party (UPP), citing similarities with The Ukombozi Alliance. The Registrar said The Ukombozi Alliance had already been reserved by another applicant on July 20, 2026.
The development has brought the two political projects into closer proximity, although the precise future of Sifuna's political vehicle remains subject to further decisions.
Reports have linked Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to efforts to establish a political vehicle for Linda Mwananchi ahead of 2027. Sifuna has previously indicated that the movement's focus is on securing its political brand rather than simply obtaining a particular party.
Kalonzo, meanwhile, has called for opposition unity and sought to play down the possibility that the similarity in names could create a lasting split. He said the coalition's stated philosophy is “One Term, One Team, One Coalition.”
The dispute over the Ukombozi name therefore adds another layer to the ongoing reorganisation of Kenya's opposition. With different political groups seeking structures ahead of 2027, questions over party names, branding and coalition arrangements are likely to remain significant as the political landscape takes shape.
For now, the established development is that Azimio has adopted The Ukombozi Alliance name, while the political vehicle associated with Linda Mwananchi remains in a separate process following the Registrar's decision on the proposed Ukombozi People's Party name.
