The milestone was achieved after the arrival of MV Hamouna, a 366-metre container ship carrying about 14,500 TEUs.
According to port officials, the vessel discharged approximately 5,200 TEUs at Lamu Port, making it the largest single-vessel container discharge recorded at the facility.
The latest achievement surpasses Lamu Port’s previous record and highlights its growing capacity to handle large container vessels.
Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto said the vessel was the first to discharge more than 5,000 TEUs at the port.
The containers will be transferred to smaller feeder vessels for onward transportation to other destinations.
The development is expected to strengthen Lamu Port’s role as a major regional maritime hub and increase its ability to serve growing cargo demand along the East African coast.
The record also comes as Kenya seeks to expand the use and commercial potential of Lamu Port.
