LINDA MWANANCHI FACTION STORMS REGISTRAR’S OFFICE IN BID TO LOCK DOWN PARTY NAME FOR 2027

Leaders of the Linda Mwananchi faction held a meeting this morning with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to discuss approval of the reservation of the “Linda Mwananchi” name for a new political party.

The engagement forms part of the group’s ongoing efforts to formalise the movement as a registered political outfit in preparation for the 2027 General Election. The faction, associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and other lawmakers who have broken ranks with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has been building momentum through grassroots rallies and public mobilisation under the “Linda Mwananchi” slogan.


According to statements from the movement’s official channels, the meeting focused on securing formal approval for the name reservation. Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka had indicated ahead of the talks that the name had already been reserved and that the group expected clearance from the registrar to proceed with registration.

The push comes amid a broader strategy by the faction to establish an independent political platform. Leaders have publicly stated that continued association with ODM is no longer viable, with some declaring the party “dead” and positioning Linda Mwananchi as their new vehicle. The movement has been linked to potential presidential ambitions for Senator Sifuna in 2027, alongside plans to field candidates at various levels and explore coalitions with other opposition groups.

This is not the first time the name has featured in registration processes. An earlier application by Charles Wanyonyi to reserve “Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya” was rejected by Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou earlier in 2026. The ORPP cited similarities with existing reserved slogans, including “Linda Mkenya, Boresha Kenya,” and public interest concerns under Section 8 of the Political Parties Act. At the time, the Sifuna-aligned group had formally objected to that independent bid, arguing it was unauthorised and risked misleading the public.

More recently, faction leaders have accused the government of interfering with their registration efforts, with claims directed at President William Ruto and the ORPP. The registrar’s office has maintained that applications are processed strictly in accordance with the law.

The latest meeting marks a significant procedural step as the Linda Mwananchi group seeks to convert its civic and political mobilisation into a fully fledged party structure. Details of the outcome of the discussions with the Registrar have not yet been publicly confirmed.

As Kenya’s political landscape continues to realign ahead of 2027, the success or otherwise of the name reservation will determine how quickly the faction can formalise its organisational framework and field candidates under the Linda Mwananchi banner.
