OLE DUME ROAD FIRE: SEVERAL VEHICLES DESTROYED IN KILIMANI GARAGE BLAZE

Several vehicles were destroyed after a fire broke out at a garage off Ole Dume Road in Kilimani, Nairobi, leaving mechanics and vehicle owners counting heavy losses.
The blaze broke out during the night and prompted an emergency response from the Nairobi County Disaster Management Centre. Firefighters and emergency response teams battled the flames for more than four hours before managing to bring the situation under control.
Nairobi County Customer Service Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said the fire spread rapidly because the garage contained vehicles, petrol and other highly flammable materials.
According to Mosiria, several vehicles were reduced to shells, with some reportedly destroyed beyond repair. The garage is said to have more than 200 mechanics, with a significant amount of property lost in the incident.
The presence of petrol and other combustible materials made the firefighting operation particularly dangerous. Emergency teams had to work carefully to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.
Mosiria described the operation as difficult and dangerous while commending firefighters, disaster management officers, mechanics and local residents who helped in the emergency response.
The incident has left mechanics and vehicle owners facing potentially significant financial losses. K24 reported that the value of the destroyed vehicles could run into millions of shillings, although the exact amount has not yet been established.
Authorities have not yet established what caused the fire. Officials are expected to assess the scene and establish the circumstances that led to the outbreak.
The incident has also renewed concerns about fire safety in Nairobi's garages and vehicle repair yards, where fuel, oils, spare parts and other combustible materials are often stored and handled in confined spaces.
The county government has assured residents that it will continue responding to emergencies and taking measures to protect lives and property across Nairobi.
For now, mechanics and vehicle owners affected by the fire are left assessing the extent of their losses as authorities work to establish the cause of the blaze.
