PRESIDENT SAMIA OBSERVES MOURNING PERIOD AFTER HUSBAND’S DEATH

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is observing a period of mourning following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.
Hafidh, who became Tanzania’s First Gentleman after President Samia assumed office in 2021, was laid to rest in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, on the same day in accordance with Islamic funeral traditions.
As a Muslim widow, President Samia is observing iddah, an Islamic waiting and mourning period that lasts four months and 10 days. The period began on the day of her husband’s death.
However, iddah does not require a widow to completely withdraw from public responsibilities. President Samia remains Tanzania’s head of state and can continue carrying out necessary official duties while observing the religious requirements of the mourning period.
The death of Hafidh has drawn condolences from leaders across the region. Kenyan President William Ruto described him as President Samia’s lifelong companion and expressed solidarity with Tanzania during the period of grief.
