RAILA’S FAMILY PROMISES ‘ALL-INCLUSIVE’ FIRST ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION
Raila Odinga’s family has promised an “all-inclusive” first anniversary commemoration to honour his life, legacy and contribution to Kenya’s political history.
The family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has promised an “all-inclusive” commemoration to mark the first anniversary of his death, giving his supporters and political allies an opportunity to honour his life and legacy.
Raila died on October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India, aged 80, after a long career in Kenyan politics and public life.
As preparations for the first anniversary gather pace, the family has constituted a committee to coordinate the planned activities. The committee is chaired by Prof. Adams Oloo.
According to the family, the commemoration will seek to bring together Raila’s supporters, friends, political associates and other Kenyans who interacted with him during his decades-long public career.
The family has noted that some of Raila’s supporters did not get an opportunity to properly mourn or bid farewell to him following his death. The anniversary will therefore provide an opportunity for them to have what the family described as “their moment with Baba.”
The planned commemoration is expected to focus not only on mourning Raila but also on celebrating his contribution to Kenya’s political and democratic development.
Raila, popularly known as “Baba,” was one of Kenya’s most influential opposition leaders. He served as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 and unsuccessfully contested the presidency on several occasions.
His political career was marked by campaigns for constitutional reforms, multiparty democracy, electoral reforms and greater political representation.
The family is yet to release the full programme for the anniversary celebrations and has called for patience as preparations continue.
The promise of an inclusive commemoration is likely to attract significant attention given Raila’s wide political following and the lasting impact he had on Kenya’s political landscape.
