“We arrived at the church and conducted the morning service as usual. As we approached Mass time, I noticed that the catechist was late, which was unusual. I instructed my secretary to call Catechist Edward Omurwa because we could not proceed with the Mass without him. The secretary later informed me that the teacher’s son had passed away. I then told the congregation, ‘Let us go and stand with the family. We cannot hold the Mass here; instead, we will celebrate it at the family’s home,’” the official said.
Upon receiving the news, church members abandoned plans for the scheduled Mass and proceeded to the family’s home to offer support and conduct prayers there instead.
Family members and neighbours expressed shock at the development, stating that Migiro had shown no outward signs of distress the previous evening. One relative noted that the young man did not eat supper the night before but emphasised there had been no disagreement or dispute within the household.
“The son last night didn’t show any signs of killing himself though he didn’t eat supper and there was no disagreement or dispute with the son and the family,” the resident said.
Local police visited the scene, secured the area, and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death. The body was moved to a nearby mortuary pending a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have not released further details pending the completion of forensic procedures and formal statements from family members.
His sudden death has left the Gachuba community in grief, with many gathering at the family home to console the bereaved parents and relatives. Church leaders called for calm and urged residents to support one another during this difficult period.
The case remains under investigation by local police, who are examining all available information to establish the full sequence of events. No foul play has been indicated at this stage, though detectives continue to gather statements from those close to the deceased.
In the wake of the tragedy, residents have appealed for greater awareness around mental health and the importance of open communication within families. Local leaders and church officials are expected to continue providing pastoral care and support to the Migiro family as funeral arrangements are made.
