TWO FEARED DEAD, VEHICLES TORCHED AS YOUTHS CLASH WITH POLICE AT KINDIKI’S EMBU RALLY

Chaos erupted at Nembure Stadium in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.

The meeting descended into violence after a group of youths reportedly attempted to gain entry into the gathering, which had been restricted to invited delegates and UDA polling officials. Police moved to block the group, triggering clashes outside the stadium. 

Police officers deployed tear gas as the youths reportedly responded by throwing stones. The confrontation quickly escalated, with several vehicles set ablaze and others vandalised. Initial reports from the scene indicated that at least two people were feared dead and several others injured. 

However, the National Police Service later confirmed one fatality, stating that one person was fatally injured during the chaos. Police also confirmed that six vehicles were torched, while several people, including officers, sustained injuries. Several suspects were arrested at the scene. 

Kindiki was reportedly evacuated from the venue as security officers worked to restore order. The National Police Service has since launched investigations to establish what triggered the confrontation and identify those responsible for the violence and destruction of property. 

UDA condemned the violence and called for punitive action against those responsible. Governor Mbarire also called for investigations into the incident, including the burning and vandalism of vehicles belonging to people who had attended the meeting. 

The incident has renewed concerns over political violence at public gatherings, particularly as Kenya heads toward another politically charged period. Political meetings are expected to provide spaces for citizens to engage with leaders, but scenes of youths clashing with police and destruction of property raise questions about the direction of political mobilisation.
