UGANDA'S TOORO KINGDOM ROCKED BY SUCCESSION BATTLE AFTER KING OYO’S DEATH
Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom is facing a bitter succession battle following the death of King Oyo Nyimba, with rival claims emerging over who should inherit the throne.

Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has been plunged into a bitter succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States. He had ruled Tooro for more than three decades after ascending the throne in 1995 at just three years old, becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time.
The dispute erupted after the kingdom’s royal clan succession committee announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king and a news anchor and editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, as the next monarch.
However, Oyo’s sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, rejected the decision, saying her late brother’s 2022 will directed that his biological son should inherit the throne.
The existence of the son had not been publicly known before Oyo’s death. Tooro’s Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced after the king’s death that Oyo had left behind a prince who was expected to be his heir, but the child’s identity was to be revealed later in accordance with kingdom traditions.
The revelation has now become central to the succession dispute, with questions being raised over the child’s identity and whether he meets the traditional requirements to inherit the Tooro throne.
Queen Mother Best Kemigisa has also condemned the selection of a new king, accusing a group of clan members of moving ahead with the process despite being aware of Oyo’s alleged wishes.
She further claimed that Uganda’s military had removed royal guards from the palace and placed members of the royal family under house arrest. The military had not immediately responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong has called for calm, saying the will, traditional customs and applicable law should be carefully examined before a final decision is made.
The succession crisis comes as the kingdom prepares to bury King Oyo at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal. His funeral is expected to attract thousands of mourners.
Although Uganda’s traditional kingdoms have no formal political authority, they retain significant cultural and social influence. Tooro is one of five traditional kingdoms recognised by the Ugandan government.
The battle over who succeeds King Oyo therefore threatens to become one of the most significant royal succession disputes in Uganda’s recent history.
