What if a toilet could reveal secrets about a world leader?
It may sound unusual, but human waste can contain a surprising amount of biological information. Modern medical testing can examine urine and stool for biomarkers associated with disease, infections and other changes in the body. Researchers have also studied DNA and epigenetic markers found in these samples for medical screening and diagnosis.

For an ordinary person, such information is largely a matter of personal privacy. For a head of state, however, biological information can carry a different level of sensitivity.
The health of a national leader can be closely watched by governments, intelligence agencies, diplomats and financial markets. In countries where political power is strongly concentrated around one individual, information suggesting a serious illness or physical weakness can become particularly sensitive.
That helps explain why some governments have gone to extraordinary lengths to prevent biological traces of their leaders from falling into foreign hands.

One of the clearest reported examples involves North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
During Kim's September 2025 visit to Beijing, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean security personnel were reported to have carefully cleaned objects the North Korean leader had touched after the meeting. Reuters reported that staff scrubbed his chair and cleaned a nearby table before removing his drinking glass.

The precautions reportedly extend beyond furniture and drinking glasses.

According to Reuters, citing reporting from Japan's Nikkei newspaper and intelligence-related sources, Kim has travelled abroad with a personal toilet so that his biological waste does not become accessible to foreign intelligence services. A North Korea leadership expert quoted by Reuters said such measures were intended to prevent foreign agencies from obtaining biological samples that could potentially provide information about Kim's health.

The concern is not entirely far-fetched from a scientific perspective.

Urine and stool are already used in medical research and testing to identify biological markers. Studies have examined DNA and DNA-methylation markers in urine and fecal samples, including markers associated with certain cancers. Stool-based tests, for example, can detect genetic and molecular changes linked to colorectal cancer.

That does not mean a single sample can automatically reveal everything about a person's medical condition. Medical interpretation depends on the type and quality of the sample, the tests performed and the scientific evidence available. But the existence of useful biological information in waste helps explain why it can be treated as sensitive material.

For highly protected political figures, the issue therefore goes beyond ordinary hygiene.

A biological sample could potentially provide information that a government would prefer to keep private. In a political environment where a leader's health is closely tied to perceptions of stability, such information could attract intense interest from foreign intelligence services.

North Korea's security practices have reportedly reflected this concern for years. Reuters noted that similar precautions were observed during Kim's previous meetings with foreign leaders, including his 2018 summit with then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his 2019 meeting with then U.S President Donald Trump.

Reports have also circulated about similar precautions surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin, including claims that his security team has taken measures to prevent foreign parties from obtaining biological material during overseas visits. Those reports, however, have a less firmly documented public record than the reporting surrounding Kim Jong Un and should therefore be treated as allegations rather than established fact.

The broader issue is one of biological intelligence the possibility that information contained in a person's biological material could be useful to someone seeking knowledge about that individual.

In the world of international politics, intelligence gathering is not limited to intercepted communications, diplomatic documents or surveillance photographs. Information about a leader's physical condition can itself be valuable.
That is why something most people never think twice about flushing away can become a security concern when it belongs to one of the world's most powerful people.
For Kim Jong Un, at least according to documented reporting, protecting that information has meant carrying his own toilet, controlling what happens to his waste and even removing traces left behind after meetings.

In the world of high-level security, apparently, even a toilet can become part of the intelligence battlefield.
