A senior Archbishop of the Repentance and Holiness Church has raised concerns over an alleged push to have the church’s leadership accompany Prophet David Owuor to State House for a visit aimed at expressing support for President William Ruto.
According to the Archbishop, the proposed engagement has faced resistance from a significant section of the church’s leadership, with about 80 per cent reportedly opposed to the visit.
The Archbishop claims the push is being driven by Uasin Gishu MP Oscar Sudi, who allegedly argues that his mother worships at the Repentance and Holiness Church and that the church should consequently commit its support to President Ruto.
He further alleges that despite the reported opposition, efforts to facilitate the visit are continuing through the church’s bishops, senior bishops, archbishops and senior archbishops.
The claims have sparked concerns over the involvement of religious institutions in political engagements and their potential impact on the independence and public perception of churches.
The Archbishop maintains that the Repentance and Holiness Church has largely remained separate from what he described as political pressure from the Ruto administration.
He warned that forcing the church into a State House engagement could undermine its public image and create the impression that the institution has taken a political position.
The allegations have not, in themselves, established that the church will ultimately visit State House or formally endorse President Ruto. Further clarification from the church leadership, Prophet Owuor, Oscar Sudi and State House would be necessary to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported engagement.
