DCI ARREST SEVEN OVER SUSPECTED COUNTERFEIT MAIZE FLOUR SYNDICATE IN KASARANI

Seven suspects have been arrested following a crackdown on a suspected counterfeit maize flour syndicate operating in the Kasarani area of Nairobi.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reportedly raided a godown in the Canaan area near Infinity Industrial Park, where they uncovered an operation allegedly involved in repackaging and distributing maize flour using packaging associated with established brands.

According to investigators, the operation was discovered while a Hyundai lorry, registration number KBR 092K, was being loaded with the suspected counterfeit products.

During the raid, detectives recovered 3,682 packets of maize flour valued at approximately KSh312,120. They also found hundreds of empty packaging materials bearing the names of other well-known maize flour brands.

The authorities further recovered equipment believed to have been used in the alleged operation, including industrial processing and packaging machinery, weighing scales, sealing equipment and date and batch-marking machines.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has reportedly joined the investigation, with samples of the recovered flour expected to undergo further examination to establish their authenticity and safety.

The seven suspects are being held as investigations continue and are expected to face the relevant legal process.

Authorities have continued to warn traders and consumers about counterfeit products, noting that fake food products can pose risks to consumers while also undermining legitimate businesses.

The suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
