EABL, KWAL BRANDS AMONG MOST TARGETED BY COUNTERFEITERS IN KENYA

Brands associated with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) and Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) are among those reportedly most susceptible to counterfeiting in Kenya, raising concerns over the growing circulation of fake alcoholic beverages.
A report by The Standard, citing information from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), indicates that certain alcohol brands from EABL, KWAL and other manufacturers have been targeted by counterfeiters. The affected products include vodka and cane-based alcoholic drinks.
The ACA has acknowledged challenges in combating counterfeit alcohol, including limitations in its capacity to effectively monitor and police the market.
Counterfeit alcoholic drinks pose significant risks to consumers because their contents and production processes may not meet safety and quality standards. Some fake alcoholic products have previously been linked to serious health concerns.
The problem also affects legitimate manufacturers, who face losses when counterfeit products imitate their brands and enter the market. The government can equally lose revenue through unpaid taxes when fake products are sold.
Consumers have consequently been urged to exercise caution when purchasing alcoholic beverages and to obtain products from reputable and authorised outlets.
The report does not suggest that EABL or KWAL are involved in counterfeiting. Rather, their brands are among those that counterfeiters reportedly attempt to imitate because of their recognition in the Kenyan market.
