Education experts are calling on the government to establish more public libraries in rural areas across Kenya to improve access to learning resources and promote a strong reading culture among children.
The experts say many learners in rural and underserved communities lack access to books, reference materials, computers and other educational resources outside the classroom. They argue that well-equipped public libraries could help bridge this gap and complement learning under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
According to the experts, libraries would provide learners with quiet spaces to read, research and develop independent learning skills. They could also support teachers and parents by providing additional educational materials that are not always readily available at home or in schools.
The call comes amid concerns over declining reading habits among young people, with increased reliance on digital entertainment and social media. Experts believe accessible community libraries could encourage children to spend more time reading while developing critical thinking, creativity and communication skills.
They have also urged the government to equip rural libraries with digital resources, including computers and reliable internet connectivity, to enable learners to access online educational materials and develop digital literacy.
The experts further emphasized the need for partnerships between the national and county governments, schools, development organizations and local communities to establish and maintain the facilities.
They said investing in public libraries should be viewed as an investment in education and the country's future, particularly for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
With CBC emphasizing research, creativity, problem-solving and learner-centred education, experts argue that expanding access to libraries could give children in rural areas a better opportunity to acquire the resources and skills needed to succeed.
The government has therefore been urged to prioritize community learning spaces as part of broader efforts to improve education equity and nurture a lasting reading culture across Kenya.
