Kenya is stepping up preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the newly named Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi emerging as one of the country’s key venues for the continental tournament.
The 60,000-seater stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, is being developed to meet the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), including facilities designed to accommodate high-profile guests, officials, players, media and supporters.
Among the standout features aimed at enhancing the experience for dignitaries are a presidential pavilion and 52 luxury skyboxes. These facilities are expected to provide premium viewing and hospitality spaces for senior government officials, CAF representatives, corporate executives and other invited guests during major AFCON fixtures.
The stadium is also being equipped with modern spectator amenities, media facilities, ICT infrastructure and broadcast systems to support international coverage of matches.
Kenyan officials have reported significant progress on the construction works, with the project entering its final stages as the country works to ensure that its infrastructure is ready ahead of the tournament.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has said Kenya has the capacity to host major AFCON events at the facility, including the possibility of staging the opening and closing ceremonies.
The development of the stadium forms part of Kenya’s wider preparations for AFCON 2027, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
With its large capacity, hospitality facilities and modern infrastructure, Raila Odinga International Stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s hosting plans and could become one of the main stages for the continent’s biggest football tournament in 2027.
As construction continues, attention will remain on whether the facility meets all CAF requirements and is delivered on schedule before the tournament begins.
