Manchester United are reportedly considering former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick as pressure grows following the club’s difficult start to the 2026/27 season.
Reports emerging on September 16 and 17, 2026, indicate that Conte has been discussed as one of the possible candidates should United decide to make a change in the dugout.
The Italian coach, who previously managed Chelsea, is currently regarded as an experienced option with a strong record of winning domestic titles. His name has reportedly entered discussions around the future of Carrick as United struggle to produce consistent results.
United’s poor run has increased scrutiny on Carrick, with the club taking just four points from their opening four Premier League matches. Their latest setback came in the Carabao Cup, where Brighton produced a dramatic comeback to beat United 3-2 after the Red Devils had taken a 2-0 lead.
The defeat added to concerns surrounding the team's performances and has intensified speculation about whether Carrick will remain in charge if results fail to improve.
Conte has previous Premier League experience, having guided Chelsea to the league title during the 2016/17 campaign. He is also known for his demanding tactical approach and experience managing major European clubs.
Despite the growing speculation, Manchester United have not officially announced that Carrick will be dismissed, nor have they confirmed Conte as his replacement.
For now, Conte remains a reported candidate rather than an appointed successor. Carrick's immediate future is therefore still subject to developments at Old Trafford and the team's results in the coming fixtures.
