TANZANIA GAZETTES MANDATORY TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR FOREIGN VISITORS
Tanzania has gazetted new regulations requiring foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania to have mandatory inbound travel insurance, with the cover expected to cost about US$44 and remain valid for up to 92 days.

Tanzania has moved to make travel insurance mandatory for foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania, with new regulations requiring international travellers to obtain an approved inbound travel insurance policy.
The government gazetted the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, on September 4, 2026, paving the way for the new requirement.
Under the regulations, foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania through airports, seaports and land border points will be required to have valid inbound travel insurance.
The policy is expected to cost about US$44, equivalent to approximately KSh5,700, and will provide coverage for a period of up to 92 days. The cover will also allow multiple entries during its validity period.
The insurance is designed to protect visitors against a range of emergencies while in the country. Among the services covered are emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation and compensation for lost luggage.
The move follows an earlier announcement by Tanzania's Ministry of Finance in July 2025 on plans to introduce mandatory travel insurance for foreign visitors. The implementation of the scheme required supporting regulations, which have now been gazetted.
However, authorities have not yet announced the specific date when enforcement of the new requirement will begin.
The new mainland regulations are separate from Zanzibar's travel insurance system. Zanzibar introduced mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors in October 2024, meaning travellers visiting the semi-autonomous archipelago have already been subject to a separate insurance requirement.
The latest move by mainland Tanzania is expected to affect international tourists, business travellers and other foreign nationals visiting the country once enforcement begins.
Travellers planning to visit Tanzania will therefore need to monitor official announcements for details on when the new requirement will take effect, how the insurance will be purchased and the approved providers of the mandatory cover.
