BRIGID KOSGEI LEADS KENYA TO GREAT NORTH RUN 1-2 FINISH AS UK PM MAKES HISTORY
Kenya dominated the 2026 Great North Run women’s elite race as Brigid Kosgei won ahead of fellow Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham made history by becoming the first serving British PM to compete in the race.

Kenyan long-distance runner Brigid Kosgei delivered a strong performance at the 2026 Great North Run, leading Kenya to a one-two finish in the women’s elite race.
Kosgei crossed the finish line first in 1:06:15, securing victory in the prestigious half-marathon. Fellow Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui finished second in 1:08:19, completing Kenya’s dominant showing.
Ethiopia’s Melknat Wudu came third after clocking 1:09:37, as the Kenyan pair maintained their advantage over the field.
The victory adds to Kenya’s strong reputation in international distance running and highlights the country’s continued dominance in major road-racing events.
The 2026 edition of the Great North Run also made headlines for a historic political milestone.
Andy Burnham became the first serving British Prime Minister to compete in the Great North Run, taking part in the 13.1-mile race in support of charity Changing Lives.
Burnham completed the course in 1:57:35, combining his participation in the famous race with a fundraising effort.
The Great North Run, one of the world's largest and best-known half-marathons, once again attracted thousands of runners and spectators, with the 2026 edition producing both sporting and historical moments.
For Kenya, however, the spotlight remained firmly on Kosgei and Chepkirui after their impressive one-two finish on the international stage.
