The deal, finalised on Monday, adds significant experience and leadership to Xabi Alonso’s squad. Henderson left Brentford by mutual consent after one season of a two-year deal he signed upon joining from Ajax in 2025. He made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Bees in 2025/26.
The 36-year-old is expected to provide leadership and Premier League experience under head coach Xabi Alonso. Henderson, who featured for England at the 2026 World Cup (where the team finished third), brings a decorated career. At Liverpool (2011–2023), where he served as captain, he won the Premier League (2019–20), UEFA Champions League (2018–19), FA Cup (2021–22), EFL Cup (2011–12 and 2021–22), UEFA Super Cup (2019), FIFA Club World Cup (2019) and Community Shield (2022).

Henderson said of the decision: “Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.“
For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
On what he can offer the squad, Henderson stated: “I still feel as hungry as ever to achieve things, to improve and to get better. And I am here now to help this football club be successful in the future.“
The older you get, you go through a lot of different experiences, and at times you can relay them to younger players. I can try and speak to them and give them a different perspective. With my age, it will be a big talking point of me coming here, but I hope by the time I leave everyone recognises what I can bring to this club.”
