DECADE LONG ILLNESS ENDS IN TRAGEDY AS NYAMECHEO MAN APPEALS FOR BURIAL HELP Nyamecheo, Kisii County

Douglas Orure’s wife, Martha Bosibori, died after battling the long-term sickness for 10 years. She left behind young children. Orure said the family has struggled to raise funds to clear outstanding hospital bills accumulated during her extended period of treatment and is unable to meet the costs associated with her burial and the children’s upkeep.

According to Orure, the financial burden has been overwhelming. He stated that the family is not in a position to settle the medical debts or cover the expenses required for a proper send-off. He further narrated that he had not paid dowry for his late wife, a fact he shared while outlining the difficulties the household now faces.

The couple had earlier experienced the loss of a child in 2018. That previous bereavement, combined with the recent death of Martha Bosibori, has left the family in a particularly vulnerable position, Orure indicated.

A resident of the area said Orure relies on casual work in the village that earns him approximately Sh200 a day to sustain the household. The resident explained that this limited income has made it extremely difficult for the family to cope with the medical bills incurred over the years of Martha Bosibori’s illness and the additional costs that have arisen following her death.

Orure, members of his family and local residents have jointly called on well-wishers to come to the family’s aid. They are seeking support to clear the hospital bills, meet funeral expenses and provide for the young children left behind. The appeal underscores the challenges faced by the household in the wake of the prolonged illness and subsequent loss.

 

Martha Bosibori’s decade-long battle with sickness had placed continuous strain on the family’s resources. Orure said efforts to raise funds during her treatment had been ongoing but insufficient to fully cover the accumulating costs. The release of her body and the organisation of burial arrangements have now added further pressure, according to the family.

In Nyamecheo, residents familiar with the family’s situation have expressed concern over the welfare of the young children. They noted that Orure’s daily earnings from village casual labour are inadequate to meet basic needs, let alone the outstanding medical debts and funeral requirements. The resident who spoke about Orure’s Sh200-a-day work emphasised that the income is used primarily to keep the household running on a day-to-day basis, leaving little or no capacity to address larger financial obligations.

Orure himself has described the situation as one in which he is not capable of shouldering the full burden alone. He appealed for assistance so that the family can settle the hospital bills and ensure the children are cared for during this period of mourning and adjustment. Family members have echoed the request, stressing the need for external support to manage both the immediate funeral costs and the longer-term needs of the young ones.
