The Starlets were handed a 4-0 defeat by tournament hosts Morocco in their opening fixture at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Although Kenya showed promise in the early stages, with Tereza Engesha striking the crossbar, the Atlas Lionesses capitalized on defensive lapses, with Ibtissam Jraïdi scoring twice to secure a comfortable victory.
Senegal also endured a disappointing start, falling 2-0 to Algeria. The results leave Kenya and Senegal rooted at the bottom of Group A without a point, while Morocco and Algeria lead the standings with three points each.
With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, Coach Beldine Odemba knows her side cannot afford another setback. Victory at the Olympic Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Kenyan time, would keep Kenya's chances of progressing alive ahead of their final group match against Algeria. Another defeat would leave the Starlets requiring a near-perfect finish and favorable results elsewhere to stand any chance of advancing.
Speaking ahead of the decisive encounter, Odemba said the technical bench had shifted its focus to rebuilding the players' confidence while addressing tactical weaknesses exposed in the opening match.

The coach also called for greater composure in front of goal after Kenya failed to convert several promising chances against Morocco before conceding.
Thursday's fixture will mark the first-ever meeting between Kenya and Senegal in women's international football, with both sides desperate to revive their campaigns.

The Starlets are featuring at the continental finals for only the second time in history, making their return after a decade-long absence. Kenya secured qualification by defeating Gambia 4-1 on aggregate during the qualifiers in late 2025.
