Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has addressed the controversy surrounding his winning goal in the Manchester derby after City secured a 1–0 victory over Manchester United.
Haaland’s strike sparked a heated debate after the goal was initially flagged for offside before VAR intervened and overturned the decision.
Speaking after the match, the Norwegian striker defended the goal, saying he does not normally find himself in offside positions.
“I don’t normally go offside,” Haaland said, as he responded to questions about the decision.
The goal became the defining moment of the derby, with Manchester United players and supporters questioning whether the attacking phase should have been stopped.
VAR determined that United defender Patrick Dorgu had played Haaland onside. However, the controversy did not end there, as City teammate Enzo Fernández was also in an offside position and his involvement in the play became another major point of discussion.
The decision to allow the goal has since attracted scrutiny, with debate focusing on whether Fernández's position affected the play and whether the goal should ultimately have stood.
Despite the controversy, Haaland’s goal was enough to give City all three points in a closely contested Manchester derby.
The result adds further intensity to the rivalry between the two Manchester clubs, while the VAR controversy is likely to remain a talking point long after the final whistle.
For Haaland, however, the focus remains on the result and the important victory for Manchester City.
