IPOA LAUNCHES PROBE INTO FATAL SHOOTING AT DP KINDIKI'S UDA RALLY IN EMBU

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the fatal shooting of two men during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at Nembure Stadium in Embu County.

The incident occurred on September 12, 2026, when the political gathering descended into chaos after clashes erupted between groups of youths and police officers outside the stadium. Several people were injured and six vehicles were reportedly torched during the unrest. 

The two men who died have been identified as Moses Munene and Mike Lewis. Postmortem examinations later confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds, intensifying calls for investigations into the circumstances surrounding their deaths. 

IPOA Commissioner John Muchiri said the authority is closely monitoring the case and will establish what transpired during the confrontation. He said IPOA will assess whether there was excessive use of force by police officers and take appropriate action if wrongdoing is established. 

The authority is expected to work alongside other investigative agencies as inquiries continue. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had earlier launched investigations into the violence and arrested two suspects in connection with the disruption. 

Families of the deceased have called for a thorough and impartial investigation, demanding justice for their loved ones. Relatives have described the victims as young men with promising futures and want those found responsible to be held accountable. 

IPOA's investigation will focus particularly on the circumstances surrounding the use of firearms and whether police action complied with the law. The authority has previously stated that its mandate includes investigating deaths and serious injuries resulting from police action.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to establish the sequence of events that led to the deaths and determine individual responsibility based on the available evidence.
