KENYAN ARBANTONE ARTIST STOOPID BOY, ‘G BAGA JAT’ HITMAKER, DIES IN NAIROBI

 Kenyan musician Edgar Waititu, widely known as Stoopid Boy, died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in Gotta City, an informal settlement in Embakasi East, Nairobi. The artist, whose breakout track “G Baga Jat” (popularly called “G Bag Na Jug”) helped define Kenya’s emerging Arbantone sound, was confirmed dead by close friends and fellow performers at the scene.

Raveen Domi, a friend and fellow artist, said he had spent time with Stoopid Boy the previous day on the streets of Gotta City. Domi described the musician as being in good spirits and said Stoopid Boy told him he was heading to a studio to continue recording new material. Domi later returned home and was informed that Stoopid Boy had died at his mother’s house. Singer Jay Classic also confirmed the death after arriving in the area, noting that the artist’s manager was present as residents gathered to mourn.

Stoopid Boy rose to national prominence in 2024 with “G Baga Jat,” a street-oriented song built around a classic Christopher Birch riddim. The track, released as a collaboration involving artists from Gotta City, captured attention for its Sheng-heavy lyrics, humour and local references. An official remix featuring established Kenyan acts Mejja, Breeder LW, Gody Tennor and Spoiler further expanded its reach. The song became one of the early markers of Arbantone, a Kenyan urban style blending riddims, street slang and youth culture.

Although the hit brought wider recognition, Stoopid Boy continued to work primarily through singles and collaborations rather than a full album. His catalogue included tracks such as “Sangwangwa,” “Gangster Lover,” “Wacha Masteam,” “Sherehe,” “Jana Nililewa” and others. In mid-2026 he publicly sought a producer, saying he had unreleased material he believed could become another major record and expressing willingness to invest personally in studio sessions.



The musician’s career unfolded alongside significant personal challenges. In 2025 he spent several months in a rehabilitation facility addressing substance-related issues and later spoke openly about his efforts to rebuild his life and career, including references to renewed faith. His death comes shortly after he publicly mourned the loss of an older brother, adding to the family’s recent hardships. Friends and media reports noted that he leaves behind two children and his mother.

Residents of Gotta City, the neighbourhood that featured prominently in his music and public identity, gathered following the news. Domi and others described the loss as particularly painful for the local music community, which had watched one of its own achieve national visibility while remaining closely tied to the area.

As of Friday morning, official statements from police or a formal cause of death determination had not been publicly released. Friends who spoke in the immediate aftermath described the development as sudden, given their recent interactions with the artist. Tributes from fans, fellow musicians and content creators continued to circulate on social media platforms, reflecting the impact of both his breakout song and his visibility within Kenya’s younger urban music scene.
