Kenya’s health system is facing growing concerns over failures in the digital systems used to manage healthcare services, according to commentator Kwamchetsi Makokha.

In an opinion article published by Daily Nation, Makokha argues that problems affecting the Social Health Authority (SHA) system have raised questions about the reliability of Kenya’s health financing system.

He points to cases of system downtime, delayed authorisations and patients experiencing difficulties accessing medical services.

Makokha also raises questions about a Sh104.8 billion healthcare information technology contract, amid concerns over how the digital health system is being managed.

A 2025 survey by the Kenya Network of Cancer Organizations cited in the article found that 65.3 per cent of patients reported delays in SHA approvals, while 60.2 per cent said they had been denied treatment at least once because of system-related challenges.

The concerns come as the government continues efforts to strengthen SHA and address fraud in the health sector.

The Ministry of Health has previously reported cases of fraudulent claims and phantom billing involving healthcare facilities and said action had been taken against those implicated.

The debate has renewed calls for a reliable and transparent digital health system that allows Kenyans to access medical services without unnecessary delays.
