The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is heating up, with Barcelona star Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé emerging as two of the biggest names in contention.
Yamal recently identified Mbappé as his main rival for the prestigious individual award while also making it clear that he believes he belongs among the best players in world football.
The debate has intensified following contrasting campaigns for the two forwards.
Yamal has enjoyed a remarkable season with Barcelona, playing a key role as the Catalan giants retained the La Liga title. He was also recognised as La Liga’s best player for the 2025/26 season.
His case was strengthened further by his performances for Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he helped the national team claim the global title.
Mbappé, meanwhile, has built his case largely around his extraordinary individual numbers. The Frenchman finished as the leading scorer in the World Cup, La Liga and Champions League, underlining his consistency in front of goal.
However, Real Madrid's failure to secure a major trophy has potentially weakened Mbappé’s chances compared with Yamal, whose season was accompanied by significant team success.
The Ballon d’Or is awarded based on individual performances, team achievements and a player's overall influence during the season. That makes the contest between the two particularly difficult to separate.
Yamal has the advantage when it comes to major trophies and his influence on Barcelona and Spain, while Mbappé can point to his remarkable goalscoring record across Europe's biggest competitions.
The debate also extends beyond the two young superstars, with other players, including Harry Kane, featuring prominently among the leading contenders for the 2026 award.
For now, Yamal appears to have a strong argument because of his combination of individual brilliance and major trophies. Mbappé, however, remains a serious challenger thanks to his extraordinary goalscoring output.
Ultimately, the final decision will be made by the Ballon d’Or voters, but the Yamal-Mbappé rivalry is already shaping up to be one of the biggest talking points in this year's race.
