LUPITA NYONG’O INVESTS IN NAIROBI CITY THUNDER AMID PLANS FOR 10,000-SEAT ARENA
Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o has announced an investment in Nairobi City Thunder as the basketball club continues to expand, amid plans for a proposed 10,000-seat indoor arena in Nairobi’s Railway City.

Oscar-winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o has announced that she is an investor in Nairobi City Thunder, adding a high-profile name to the Kenyan basketball club as it continues to grow on the continental stage.
Nyong’o announced the investment on September 24, 2026, through an Instagram post featuring a tunnel-walk video while wearing Nairobi City Thunder merchandise. She celebrated the club’s achievement as the first Kenyan team to qualify for the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
Her investment comes at a time when basketball is attracting increased attention and investment in Kenya. Earlier this year, I&M Bank committed KSh10 million to support Nairobi City Thunder, while FXPesa also entered into a partnership with the club for the 2026 season.
The development also coincides with plans for a major indoor sports and entertainment arena in Nairobi’s Railway City. The proposed facility is expected to have a capacity of 10,000 people and form part of a wider KSh38.14 billion mixed-use development involving sports, hospitality, retail and entertainment facilities.
The arena project is being developed by Zaria Group, co-founded by basketball executive Masai Ujiri, through its local development partner. The proposed venue is expected to host basketball games, concerts, conferences and other major events.
However, Nyong’o’s investment in Nairobi City Thunder and the proposed arena are separate developments. There is no indication in the available reports that her investment is financing the arena project.
Nyong’o’s entry into the club adds further visibility to Nairobi City Thunder as the team seeks to build on its success and strengthen Kenya’s presence in African basketball.
