Howe, who took over in November 2021 when Newcastle were battling relegation, is understood to have informed the club's hierarchy of his decision to step away from management following a demanding 2025/26 campaign. His departure is expected to be by mutual agreement.
The 48-year-old's final match in charge was Wednesday's 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial spells in Newcastle's modern history.
Club officials are reportedly well advanced in discussions with Jaissle, the 38-year-old German tactician currently in charge of Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli. He has emerged as the frontrunner to take over ahead of Newcastle's Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 23.
Howe leaves behind a remarkable legacy after transforming Newcastle into one of England's top clubs following the Saudi-backed takeover.
Across all competitions, he managed 231 matches, recording 116 victories, 43 draws and 72 defeats. In the Premier League, he guided the Magpies in 179 games, winning 84, drawing 38 and losing 57.
His greatest achievement came in 2025 when Newcastle defeated Liverpool 2-0 to lift the Carabao Cup, ending the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and securing its first major silverware in 56 years.

Under Howe, Newcastle also qualified for the UEFA Champions League on two occasions, finishing among the Premier League's top five in the 2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons before reaching the Champions League Round of 16 during the 2025/26 campaign.  His Premier League win percentage ranks among the best of any Newcastle manager in the modern era, highlighting the remarkable turnaround he engineered after inheriting a team struggling at the foot of the table.
Jaissle is expected to inherit a squad undergoing significant rebuilding following several high-profile departures. The German coach has earned widespread praise for his attacking philosophy, winning consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles and an Austrian Cup with Red Bull Salzburg before guiding Al Ahli to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026.

With Newcastle's new season fast approaching, the club is expected to move quickly to finalise the managerial transition.
Howe's exit marks the close of a transformative chapter at St James' Park, leaving behind a legacy defined by silverware, European football and the revival of one of England's most historic clubs.
