A 28-year-old woman, Mercy Kanini, is mourning the loss of four of her five babies after giving birth to quintuplets at Thika Level Five Hospital in Kiambu County.

Kanini delivered the five babies on September 14, 2026, in what was initially a moment of joy for her family. The quintuplets comprised four girls and one boy.

The babies were, however, born extremely prematurely at about 26 weeks of pregnancy, with their weights reported to range between approximately 630 grammes and 800 grammes.

Due to their critical condition and need for specialised neonatal care, the five newborns were transferred from Thika Level Five Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Four of the babies later died while receiving care at KNH. One baby survived and remained under specialised medical attention.

The deaths have highlighted the significant challenges faced by extremely premature newborns, who often require specialised equipment and round-the-clock neonatal care to survive.

Kanini's case has also drawn attention to the risks associated with multiple pregnancies, particularly when babies are delivered significantly before the normal gestation period.

The family is now dealing with the loss of four newborns while hoping for the recovery of the surviving baby.
The incident has renewed discussions about the importance of specialised neonatal units and access to advanced care for premature babies in Kenya.
