BENNI MCCARTHY BLAMES OFF-FIELD ISSUES FOR KENYA’S ERITREA DRAW

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has attributed Kenya’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Eritrea to disrupted preparations and issues surrounding the team ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Kenya opened their Group D campaign with a draw against Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, September 26, after Ryan Ogam scored a late equaliser to rescue a point for the hosts. 

McCarthy said the team’s preparations had been affected by off-field challenges, including a dispute over unpaid player allowances that disrupted training ahead of the match.

The coach had earlier raised concerns about the welfare of the players, saying promises on outstanding allowances had not been fulfilled. Players had reportedly boycotted training as they sought payment for previous assignments. 

McCarthy also faced uncertainty over his own work permit. The coach publicly criticised the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over the delay, while the federation said the process was ongoing. 

On the pitch, Kenya struggled to convert their chances and fell behind in the first half following a defensive error. Ogam eventually levelled the contest, but Harambee Stars could not find a winning goal. 

The result leaves Kenya preparing for their next Group D assignment against Guinea in Conakry on October 1. FKF had confirmed the two fixtures as Kenya’s opening matches in the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. 

McCarthy now faces the task of addressing both the team’s preparation and performance as Harambee Stars continue their campaign.
